I recently read an article on how Christians should vote. The report cites Pastor Tony Evans, who stated in his book on the matter that “Every voting choice you exercise ought to be for the candidate, platform, party, or policy that will best represent the values of the kingdom of God.” Perhaps this is why many pastors say to their congregants, “vote your values” since churches by law are not supposed to endorse political candidates. But Pastor Evan’s words and “vote your values” are not necessarily the same.
The assumption is that the people who attend church are well-read and in right relationship regarding the values of God. While church attendees should be, we all know a wish does not make it so. Therefore, I would encourage all Christians not to vote your values but to vote for the values of the kingdom of God as Pastor Evans says, whether we like it or not. How you do this is by praying to the Father God in Jesus’ name for a clean heart and wisdom. Then, opening your Bible to also meditate on the biblical principles related to our political issues.
Be mindful that the Christian vote is not a vote for a particular political party but a vote for righteousness. Our role in politics is to pray for our elected leaders and those in authority, and offer a moral consciousness to both sides of the aisle. Our vote in elections is how we speak up for God’s values–which, by the way, are always just.
So take the burden off yourself today. God knows we are not perfect, our values change over time, and our feelings are fickle. But God’s Word (the Bible) never changes and we should ask Him for wisdom on every voting matter and then vote God’s values.
