“Friendship … is born at the moment when one man says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought that no one but myself… And instantly they stand together in an immense solitude.” – C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves.
In my book, I discuss practical ways to combat isolation, and forming friendships is one of the best. Finding people who connect with you because of a similar struggle or journey, past or present, is FREEING. It BEATS down the walls we build around ourselves and allows us to regain connection through a shared bond.
It’s natural to rally around surface-level, tribal things, but it takes effort to go deeper and relate to one another based on the similar journeys God is bringing us through or has brought us through. That’s a philia-type love, chosen for a season or a reason.
“You have the power to choose connection. You can choose support. You can choose to develop peer friendships, and I hope you will make that choice.” – a final word on connection from Beating the Isolation Trap by Leah A. Taylor.
