Stepping away from creative work to kick off the celebration of Black Americans! All month long! In honor of the significance of Black Americans and our unique struggle, I wrote a poem by accident.

I’m not a poet, so please be gentle. Here it flows:

Why Celebrate Black History

The pioneers, the patriots, the ceiling breakers, 

the firsts, the greatest, the industry makers, 

the brains, the brawns, but not the rump shakers.  

It’s about our intellect, integrity, and ingenuity,

our determination, dedication, and devotion to the Black family. 

To be acknowledged and applauded is nice, you see,

but as humans, it was all about our dignity 

to be respected as God’s children and to always live free. 

Free to dream, to thrive, and express our individuality,  

As a praise to Him who loved us first and holds our eternity.

To my Black sisters and brothers, I want you to be encouraged to follow Jesus when He said, in John 16:33 (BSB), “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!” Let’s stop saying He’s got us and let’s start acting like we believe it.

Also remember that we should not place our highly melanted skin over the One who chose us to wear it. Our pride is not in our race or color, for pride becomes hubris and removes our eyes from watching God. But let us boast in the Lord! And hold onto 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 which asks us, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”

Be encouraged, glorify God and “press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us,” according to Phillipians 3:14.

We are a special people in an amazing land for such an opportune time as this. May we keep God alive in our hearts, do His will, using every talent He has given us, and if you have not already, may you make Jesus Christ your Lord this Black History Month.
